Many believe that the story of Oz had hidden symbolism. In scenes 17 and 18 Dorothy first arrives in Munchkinland and given the powerful Red Ruby Slippers. Shoes and the color red can symbolize sexuality. Some theorize that the slippers that magically appear onto Dorothy’s feet just as women suddenly begin to have menstrual periods, at first unwanted, but discover the power of their sexuality.
